Meet Rikus, owner of the Lekker Kampplekke website www.lekkerkampplekke.co.za where he shares a wealth of information about south Africas many Camping Spots. He is a keen camper, loves the outdoors and is a proud ambassador of the quality range of SnoMaster products.
Tell us about yourself and what your passion is?
I stay in Heidelberg, a small town in the Southern Cape. I always wanted to stay in the “platteland” / country so it was a dream come true when I got the opportunity to buy property in Heidelberg. The platteland lifestyle is more laid-back and there are so many beautiful campsites on my doorstep. Since I moved to Heidelberg, I have helped a few farmers to open up new campsites on their farms.
I have always had a passion for the outdoors, camping and taking unplanned road trips. The off-road lifestyle is so appealing and I take to off-the-grid as much as I can. I also love taking camping trips with my 16-year old son – making sure our youth is also exposed to the outdoors – bringing up the next generation of campers in South Africa.
What don’t people know about you?
I was a detective in the Police Force for 21 years before I decided to resign and start-up Lekker Kampplekke as my full time “job”. I also love a great cup of good coffee. I am the father to Karlo and Angelique, now married to Bryce, and the husband to Loret, my partner in Lekker Kampplekke.
Explain what you do, and how SnoMaster fits into your trips?
My 60L SnoMaster is an essential part of my camping gear – a permanent fixture in the back of my vehicle, always running to keep a few cold drinks or a packet of boerewors cold for a quick braai in the rough. We are usually 3 people when we go camping, so the 60L suits our needs when going on a weekend camping trip.

For longer trips, we use our 92.5l Dual Compartment SnoMaster, as it is equipped with a fridge and freezer compartment and big enough so that we can pack enough meat and other food that needs to be kept frozen for the duration of our trips.
Favourite destination?
I actually have a few favourite camping spots. When someone asks me where my favourite camping spot is, I usually answer that it is the campsite where I hear the fish eagle’s cry when I go kayak first thing in the morning. A favourite spot that we love to visit, is Crodini – a small, off-the-grid campsite next to the Breede River.
We have 2 rescue dogs, so we love taking them with and Crodini allows well-behaved dogs. Also, this campsite is right on my doorstep, about 40km from my residence.
